Growing Information

Common Name: Ironweed
Botanical Name: Vernonia species
Plant Type: Herbaceous flowering perennial
Growth Stage: Live bare-root rhizome
Sun Requirements: Full sun to partial sun
Soil: Adaptable; performs best in reasonably fertile soil with adequate moisture
Watering: Keep consistently moist while establishing; do not allow newly planted rhizomes to completely dry out
Mature Height: Varies by Ironweed species and growing conditions
Growth Rate: Moderate once established
USDA Zones: Varies by species; many Ironweed species are cold-hardy perennials
Container Friendly: Possible, though generally best suited to garden and naturalized plantings

💡 Care Tip: Plant each rhizome approximately 3–4 inches deep as soon as possible after arrival and water thoroughly. Keep the planting area from completely drying out for at least the first 30 days. Do not be concerned if you see little or no above-ground growth during the current season, particularly with late-season planting. Healthy dormant rhizomes can establish underground and emerge when suitable growing conditions return.
